About Boston Terrier Puppies For Sale The Boston terrier is one of the few breeds developed in the United States and is named for its city of origin. The breed is the result of crossing an English terrier with an English bulldog in the 1870s. As such, the breed is a relatively new one, and for the first few years, the breed was called by other names, including American bull terrier and Boston bull. The breed’s name was officially changed to Boston terrier during the 1890s.

As a breed, Boston terriers are affectionate, playful and amiable. Their good nature makes them popular as companion dogs, and they tolerate children better than many other breeds of small dogs. They usually have little or no trouble with other family pets, including cats, particularly if raised in the same household.

The American Kennel Club recognizes three categories of Boston terriers that are determined by weight. The groupings are for Bostons weighing less than 15 pounds; those weighing at least 15, but less than 20 pounds; and those weighing 15 to 25 pounds. On average, male Boston terriers weigh between 15 and 25 pounds, while weights for females range from 10 to 20 pounds. At the withers, the average height is 16 to 17 inches.

Boston terriers have a short, flat coat and need only basic grooming, such as brushing every day or two and bathing. They need 20 to 40 minutes of exercise a day, but do better with moderate-length walks or several short sessions of play than an extended, vigorous session. They have a reputation for loving to play “fetch” or chase a ball. As a breed, they are not known as diggers although some enjoy burying an occasional bone in the flowerbed, nor are they known as aggressive protectors — they are simply too friendly and tend to view all visitors as welcome guests. However, some Boston terriers have been known to be very protective of their human families or resentful of other dogs invading their territories.

As an indoor dog, Boston terriers make good companions. They are not known for excessive barking. The breed does less well as an outdoor dog. They do not tolerate extreme temperatures well, and they can overheat in the summer and chill easily in the winter.

Boston terriers are black, seal or brindle with white markings. As defined by the AKC, seal may appear black until viewed in bright light or sunlight, when its reddish cast will be visible. Brindle is not a color, but a pattern in which black hairs are layered in areas of brown, gray or another lighter color to produce a striped pattern. Although the AKC finds other colors less desirable, Boston terriers can also be brown, red, cream or liver.

It is interesting to note that the Boston terrier was originally bred in hopes of creating an outstanding fighting dog. Although they could certainly hold their own pound-for-pound in a confrontation, Boston terriers are lovers, not fighters. Any penchant for violence has long been replaced by a preference for human affection. In fact, the breed has been called “the American Gentleman” for its pleasant nature as well as its markings that are suggestive of men’s formal wear.

Boston terriers are compact and sturdy, with broad chests and even proportions, such as the ratio of leg length to body length. Their faces have a somewhat squashed appearance and large, wide-set dark eyes. The skulls are flat on top and rather square. All of these elements combine to give Boston terriers a striking — if a somewhat cubic — appearance.

An intelligent breed, Boston terriers are typically easy to train. However, certain Bostons can show an occasional stubborn streak, such as ignoring a command that was executed perfectly an hour or two earlier. Most owners view this as endearing, not annoying, due to the dog’s tendency to display affection and overall cheerful nature.

Whether the future home will be an apartment or a sprawling suburban house, a Boston terrier puppy can be the ideal companion for owners of any age. Their exercise needs are moderate and grooming requirements are low. Purchasing a Boston terrier puppy can be an excellent decision for those looking for a happy, loving pet.X
