About Cavalier King Charles Puppies for Sale

The Cavalier King Charles is a toy breed of dog that originated in the United Kingdom where it was mainly used for hunting small birds. It is known by a variety of different names including the Cavalier King Charles, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Cav, Cavie, Cavalier, Ruby Spaniel and the Blenheim Spaniel.

Brief History of the Breed

Toy-sized spaniels that resembled today’s Cavalier King Charles have been around for centuries. In fact, these little dogs were adored by King Charles II, and he was rarely seen without one by his side. During this time, Cavies were mainly used to hunt small birds. However, King Charles II enjoyed their companionship as well.

In fact, he even passed a law that allowed Cavies to enter any public place including government buildings. It is thought that the Cavalier King Charles we know today was developed by crossing small spaniels with such oriental breeds as the Tibetan Spaniel and the Japanese Chin. The resulting dogs were referred to as Comforter Spaniels or Tudor Lap Dogs because they were often used to warm their owners’ laps and feet.

After King Charles II died, the Duke of Marlborough took over the development of the breed. His favorite spaniels were the red and white ones, which he named Blenheim Spaniels after his estate. While early Cavies had longer noses, the Duke preferred those with shorter muzzles, and these dogs quickly became popular. However, this was soon to change.

In the early 1900s, a rich American by the name of Roswell Eldridge visited England and offered a large cash prize for the best long-nosed Cavie that resembled the early type. Right away, breeders began breeding their old-type Cavies in hopes of winning the prize. With time, the long-nosed Cavaliers became popular once again.

Characteristics of the Breed

Cavalier King Charles are small dogs that can weigh anywhere between 10 and 18 pounds fully grown. They have a medium-length silky coat that is longer on their ears, tail, legs and chest. Acceptable colors include black and tan (King Charles), tri-color (Prince Charles), white and chestnut (Blenheim), and chestnut (Ruby).

Cavies’ ears are long and hang just above the shoulder blades. They have dark eyes, a slightly rounded head, long tail, black nose and a full muzzle. These are happy and energetic dogs that love to play with their human family members. They are also extremely affectionate and enjoy cuddling. This is also a highly intelligent breed that is extremely easy to train.

Grooming the Cavalier King Charles

If you choose to purchase a Cavalier King Charles, you will want to brush its silky hair at least once per day to prevent any tangles from developing. You should only need to bathe your pet once or twice a month. However, you will need to check its ears regularly for any wax accumulation or signs of infection.

Finally, if the nails grow overly long, you can clip the tips of them off using a guillotine-type nail clipper that is specially designed for use on pets. When clipping your Cavie’s nails, be extra careful that you do not cut into the tiny veins that grow within each of them. If you do graze a vein, applying styptic powder to the nail will stop any bleeding.

If you are looking for a sweet and lovable dog that loves to play and learns quickly, you should consider purchasing a Cavalier King Charles puppy. These dogs possess a rich history as aristocratic lap dogs: a status that they continue to uphold today. When you add one of these little dogs to your home, you will have made a terrific decision.
